The Jersey Devil Will Eat Me
When I was a kid, I was fascinated with ghosts, Bigfoot, and UFOs. Mostly because they scared the pants off of me. I have no idea how many nights I went to sleep, utterly terrified after reading some lurid 'eyewitness account' of how the Jersey Devil busted into some kid's room and shredded them alive.

DUDE. I COULD HAVE BEEN THAT KID.

Anyhow. This probably also had a lot to do with friends that liked watching horror movies a little too much, and rounds of Bloody Mary and Ouija Boards. I was a total chicken. Still am. When I do business travel? I sleep with the lights on. Yeah. Don't tell my boss.

I've been pretty good about it in recent years. Even though my husband has a wild love for anything scary/gory, I usually steer clear of them. Most horror movies don't scare me anymore, but I do admit some leave me unsettled. And now that we have cable? I realize just how much creepy stuff is on TV. Yesterday we watched Cabin Fever, Dawn of the Dead, and nine million episodes of A Haunting, a cinematic documentary on some travel channel about 'real life hauntings'. After one particular episode that features a ranch style house (!!!), my husband yawns, looks at me and says "Time for bed!"

BED?

NOW?

Needless to say, I had difficulty going to sleep. After years and years of not being wigged out by TV, I was officially wigged out by TV. 31 years old, and I had to make sure the closet door was shut before I went to bed.

My husband, good man that he is, allowed me to hold his hand until I went to sleep.

Isn't this sad?

Furthermore, we are now recording the entire series of Ghost Hunters International, because I don't know when to stop. But dude. 14th century haunted British manor house? I am so there.

I can't sleep with the closet open either. I have to shut it completely. That's a habit from childhood I have never been able to break.

Thank you! And no mirrors in the dark. I am scarred from rounds of Bloody Mary as a kid. SCARRED.

OMG, when I stumble into the bathroom at night, I always purposely look at my feet because I don't want to catch something in the mirror I'm going to regret!

I thought I was the only one. I even check behind the door and keep our shower curtain open when we don't have guests. Way too many bad things get you in the bathroom in movies.

And I'm 30.

See, I'm sneaky about the way I check behind doors. Just to give the impression I'm a normal, well-adjusted adult. Instead of peeking behind it, I push it all the way back against the wall before I enter!

LOL! See, therein lies my dilemma. The shower is directly behind the door! Agh! Apparently this layout was planned by a very unparanoid architect. ;)

Oh no! That is very poor planning on the part of the architect!

I was certain that BigFoot lived in the woods behind our house when I was growing up. With the aliens.

I was positive that if I didn't sleep with the sheets covering every inch of my body, Bigfoot would see me and eat my entrails.

I read way too many scary books as a kid.

I'll tell you, it was cool being reminded of the Jersey Devil having grown up with the legend, the pine barrens, leeds point and all that. My "Uncle" Ed Sheetz drew the most famous picture of him. Thanks for the memory. And, um, sorry you were scared, lol.

Aw, very cool!

I plan on using the Jersey Devil in a book at some point, I think. It's too wonderfully bizarre not to use.

I can't laugh. I'm another one who gets creeped out by TV. Although I'm odd. I need to have the closet doors open and the bedroom door closed.

My fiance and I bought the first three seasons of Ghost Hunters the Original on DVD and I spent days just watching episode after episode. One night, I had a scary ass nightmare that a demon was trying to kill my fiance while we were sleeping. So, being the good partner that I am, I was reaching over him trying to fight the demon off. The next morning, my fiance informed me that during the night I had woken him up because I was choking him...

D'oh! My GH watching time was strictly rationed after that.

YES! I'm just happy I dream about spiders and not about demons. Gah.

Heh. Yeah, I've done silly stuff like that. Like read about serial killers in the middle of the night or watching Supernatural in complete darkness.

The one with Bloody Mary. XD I couldn't look into a mirror for DAYS.

I also like my closet doors closed and the shower curtain not drawn, or what ya call it.

And I'm usually not big on the silence at all.

I told my husband I was thrilled he does not work outside of the house, because I never have to worry about being home alone. That's when all the bad shit always happens, you know.
