U-Turn & Alphasmart Update

The writing continues apace. I took a bit of a wrong-turn with a scene earlier. I wasn’t terribly thrilled with it but it didn’t seem wrong on the surface. The lovely  [info]meep_snookies poked holes in my plot and I know where to fix it now. She is good like that. I think we all need that reader that slaps us across the face and says “You’re better than that, bizzatch!”
Other than that, I have been using my Alphasmart. And I am…torn. I do not profess the same great love for it that I did before.

Here are the things that I love about it:
1) On/Off instantly. This is awesome.
2) Instant save.
3) Battery-life FTW!!

On the other hand, here are the things that I hate.
1) I still find the upload process irritating.
2) NO BACKLIT SCREEN
3) Teeny tiny screen
4) Oh, did I mention the screen is annoying?
5) Still hung up on the screen.
6) I should have bought a laptop, sigh.
I could b&tch about the personal ergonomics – unless I am sitting propped up completely upright and using a lapdesk, the A/S kills my wrist. I suspect that this is because I am a lazy-writer and no fault of the product itself. I refuse to sit at a table and work on the thing, though, so I normally work in bed or on the sofa. Take that with a grain of salt.

But I can’t get past the danged screen. It drives me nuts. Half the time I can’t see what I’m writing. I’m a writer. I have bad eyesight. That’s a given. I’ve upped the contrast – not much of a difference. I can up the font-size, but then I’ve got like two sentences on the screen. Currently I have six, because I am one of those writers that re-reads the last sentence repeatedly to see where I am at. The alphasmart makes this difficult.

So I don’t know. I went into this saying “Oh the screen size isn’t going to bother me.” Apparently I am delusional, because it bothers the heck out of me. If the screen was bigger and brighter I wouldn’t give a crap about the rest.
I am going to go out and buy a big standing lamp and hang it over my sofa to provide better screen-viewing. But for $250, part of me kind of wishes I’d gone the expensive route and sprung for the laptop, cruddy battery life and all.
So the Alphasmart is good…but not great. I wish it were great.

HEAT Metrics
Word Count: 8000 (out of an approx 80,000)
Mean Things: Nothing yet (hence my problem with the scene)
Nice Things: Still cute boy in scene. Cute boys are nice.
In Dire Need of a Rewrite: Above-mentioned scene. Needs more roller-derby.
Things I Need To Think up Before Next Writing Session: New scene. Oy. I think I need new metrics.
Currently reading: THE SPYMASTER’S LADY by Joanna Bourne. Great read for a character study, if nothing else. She does an amazing job with her characters.

Making this book my bitch

I'm totally showing this story who's the boss. Rawr. I need some better icons, though. I think that's my goal tomorrow night (AFTER SURVIVOR OMG LOVE !!!!!!) - new iconage.

Not sure if my rewritten scene has enough roller-derby for now, but it's going to stay how it is I think. At least for the time being. Too much backwards meddling means no forward progress. Backwards meddling is of teh debil.

HEAT metrics
Word count:  9402 (out of 80,000)
Mean Things: Subjected my readers to a lousy quip about cats and dogs.
Nice Things: I like the quip about cats and dogs. It's nice for me at least. ;)
Things that Need to be Fixed Liek Nao: This book is very dialogue heavy. Maybe it's just my font, or maybe I have lost my describin' ways.
Things I need to Think Up Before Next Writing Session: Everything next. Still need new metrics.
Currently Reading: No time to read today.

This book could go in a couple of directions. I am mentally toying with the one - it's less straight-forward than my original concept, but I think it'll add a bit of fun to the book more than the plot I originally had in mind.

Actually...it all just zinged in my head. With big eleventy-ones !!1!!1!1!!11!!!!

Fear the plot. Fear.

(And now I am babbling incoherently so I must go sleep. Sleep goot.)
